Who has the tallest sunflower? Children plant seeds and track over weeks whose flower grows the highest.

Learning goal

Children learn to take responsibility for a plant and understand the full life cycle from seed to harvest.

Materials

Step by step

  1. 1

    Each child gets their own pot and 2–3 sunflower seeds.

  2. 2

    Press the seeds about 2 cm deep into moist soil.

  3. 3

    Water regularly and place in a sunny spot.

  4. 4

    Measure the height every week and record it in the garden notebook.

  5. 5

    If seedlings are too close together, keep the strongest one.

  6. 6

    In summer the sunflower blooms – compare at the end: who won?

  7. 7

    Harvest the seeds in autumn and hang them out for birds.
