Building an Insect Hotel

Wood, bamboo and pine cones become a little hotel for wild bees and other beneficial insects.

Children learn why wild bees and other insects are important for pollination and how to help them.

Materials

Step by step

    Prepare the wooden frame or tin can as the base structure.

  2. 2

    Cut bamboo tubes to the depth of the frame.

  3. 3

    Pack tubes, reed stalks and pine cones tightly into the frame.

  4. 4

    Fill gaps with clay so everything stays in place.

  5. 5

    Attach a wire for hanging.

  6. 6

    Hang the hotel in a sunny, rain-sheltered spot (about 1 m high).

  7. 7

    Watch which insects move in!
